Award-winning actress and children’s author Jamie Lee Curtis will receive an award tomorrow in Washington, D.C., at the sixth annual National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Curtis is being honored for her work on behalf of children. The theme of the event, of which APA is a cosponsor, is "Building Resilience in Young Children Dealing With Trauma." A study reported in the April 15 issue of Psychiatric News emphasized the importance of early identification of children who suffer traumatic injury because they are at higher of risk of developing anxiety, depression, or substance used and thus may need referral to psychiatric care.
